Affirmation: I Show up as my real self today [Tweet baby tweet]

Today I want to talk with you about the mask we wear at work.

So here is the deal.  So many people I talk to feel they can’t show up as themselves at work.  There are so many contributing factors to that feeling. Some internal and some external.  So, you put on a mask to survive.

Thing is after a while you forget you’re wearing a mask.  It becomes our default mode at work.  Things may have changed but you still see things through the mask.  You remember how things have been and the wrong that has been done to you.

I get it, I own a mask and I’ve worn it for a long time.

I have two requests today:

1. Take off the mask from time to time so you can see what is Really going on and if anything has changed in the environment in favor of who you truly are.

2. Remind yourself that you are wearing a mask or you may start believe that it’s who you really are.

I know I said I had 2 request but I lied.  Here is a third,

3. For today, when someone ask you what you are going to be for Halloween, tell them, “I’m going to be myself today.”

Wear something different, talk different, behave different.  Of course this is not different to you only to them.  You know this is who you really are but to “them,” they’ve only gotten to know the mask.

I must say, your unmasked self is beautiful.  Thanks for sharing it with us.  Let me know how it goes and how it feels.

Remember, you don’t have to leave your job to leave a mark but you have to leave the mask behind.

When I'm not in search of contract work (projects) that I can do during the nights and weekends I can be found working as a mild mannered Digital Content Manager for Babson Executive Education.
