What did you run away from? I ran away from being called a leader and anything to do with leadership for a long time, only to find out it’s what I was called to be. There really isn’t one right way to be a leader, but in my mind I thought I had to follow a certain template.
Quick story to make my point– When I was a freshman in college, I went out for the football team and started learning about being a Corner Back. It seemed complicated with the calls and field positioning that they had to worry about, so when I was asked, “What position do you play?” I quickly told my coach that I play Free Safety. Little did I know they saved teaching the most complicated position in the secondary for last.
I came to find out that the position–Free Safety– was one of leadership. My role required me to quickly recognize what the opposing team’s offense was doing and communicate what I saw to let our defense know what to do. If the offense shifted, I had to make another call. Not something for the faint of heart or someone who is not cool under pressure.
What I thought I was running away from (leadership) is exactly what I was running to! I did a decent job as a Free Safety, since I am not one to back away from a challenge or hard work. It was hard work, but I embraced the leader that is inside of me.
