Hip Hop Affirmation of the Day#356

“I put my life on paper when I record my music. You can look me in my eyes and see it’s more than music.” ~The Diplomats (More Than Music)

Affirmation of the Day: My actions are meaningful

The word, “Meaning” is one that you will find flying around at an increasing rate during the Holidays.  What’s the meaning of Christmas?  What’s the meaning of life?  What the meaning of my work? etc.  I’ve stopped by to share 2 brief stories that will hopefully be of assistance on your search for meaning:

If You Want Meaning…Do Something

A few years back when I was working as the Marketing Manager for Athletics and Corporate Relations at The University of Connecticut (UCONN) something hit me.  I finished a masters in sports management a few years earlier and decided to take on this position in marketing that seemed very sexy; I got tickets to games, I rubbed elbows with corporate folks and I had an unbelievable boss.

One day I started asking, “What’s the meaning behind all of this?”  “Why do we do what we do?” I just could not find the value I was bringing to the world in the role that I held (not to knock anyone who currently has the position).  With that being said, I decided to jumped ship and headed to Boston to work with another company that I thought would be more aligned in  assisting with the meaning thing.

The point of the abridged version of the story is that I did something in search of meaning. I did not just wallow in my situation.  Would I recommend you make the same move absolutely and absolutely not.  It all depends on your personal situation.  You don’t have to do it exactly how I did it.  You could start doing things on the side as you continue on your quest for meaning.

If You Want to Rediscover Meaning…Do Nothing

On the flip side of the coin, is stopping when you find yourself doing something that does not provide the meaning you originally intended.  Here’s another personal example:

The other night I was writing Christmas cards and noticed I was getting tired and stopped writing notes in the cards.  I was simply writing the persons name, “To: Marie” and writing the closing, “Love, Mike” when it hit me; I want the cards to mean a little bit more.  If I’m going to just write a persons name so I can say I sent a card, then what’s the point?  What’s the meaning behind the card?  I stopped in my tracks, went to bed and went after it fresh the next day.

Sometimes you might start off with a particular meaning in mind, but it slowly becomes diluted.  When you find yourself in such a space, stop, rest if you must, remind yourself why you’re doing this thing in the first place and begin again.

Question of the Day:What makes your work meaningful?

Action of the Day: spend some time with the question above and journal on it.
