Affirmation of the Day: “What I am is so much more powerful than what I am not.”
The father’s day sermon at church was pretty powerful–I must admit that I have not been in church for a while, but that’s story for another post.
I was moved by the guest preacher who asked that we all be a father to something or someone. He referred to understanding that whatever stage you are in your life, there is someone currently at a place in life that you have already been and could use your guidance. What usually gets in the way is the thought that we are not good enough or not perfect enough to help someone else. The preacher explained that the people we are “fathering” are not looking for perfection, just your willingness to participate in their lives. If you think I’m talking about some kind of little brother or little sister program, let me be clear, I am not. You could be 70yrs old and the person you are “fathering:” is 65yrs old or the tables may be turned and the person you are “fathering” is older than you are (for example, you could be “fathering” an older person who is starting a business and you have already been there or better yet, they may be trying to get a handle on all this social networking and blogging stuff). The whole point is to share your value with someone else despite your mistakes. Don’t let your mistakes overpower the value you have to bring!
When I think about my personal experience and journey, the folks that have “fathered” me are far from perfect, but they are still successful and gave me something to strive for and a belief that I can make unbelievable things happen even with all my faults. Well what has gotten in the way of me “fathering” someone else? The thought that “I’m not an expert and that I have not made my first Million $$ yet. Notice I said, “what has gotten in the way,” past tense. Time to “father” on.
