Today I want to talk about working around a problem.
There are times when you can’t go through a problem. You have to work around it. As you strive to build your brand at work you may run into road blocks. It really sucks when the person who is supposed to help you remove roadblocks ends up being the roadblock themselves. I’m talking about your boss or manager. So what do you?
Here are 3 steps you can take:
1. Talk to your boss about what you are experiencing. Don’t be vague here, use examples so it’s real. It’s possible that your boss doesn’t even realize what they are doing.
2. Look to other resources: yep, go to human resources to get a few ideas about what you can do / what has been done in the past in similar situations. Ideally they are able to advise you and give you different paths including having a 3rd party facilitate a conversation with you and your boss.
3. Things still not working and you want to stay at the job? Work around your boss. Get involved in voluntary committees and get to know the people your boss looks up to. Why? Because if your boss is talking trash about you, you want to have built relationships with others so their response to trash talk they hear about you is, “That’s interesting, I’ve worked with [insert your name here] and I had a different experience.”
Keep up the good fight and know at the end of the day you own your career. Please don’t become someone who gets so fed up that you just show up to work but don’t really show up. Know what I mean? You’re too good for that.
Remember, you don’t have to leave your job to leave a mark, but you may have to work around your boss.
